Envy Street - 1915

All the photographs of my sculptures in my first two monographies, published in Chicago, were made by me with a very old, small Volkiander camera. At that time, there were no flexible films, but glass negative plates. Some of the plates were spoiled by having been accidentally exposed to light.

Such plates I did not throw away, but used them for making more drawings. I improvised directly on the filmy side of the plate, using a sharp-pointed pin at the end of a stick or my pocket knife for larger (black) areas. The plates were large (about 5" x 7") and I made a number of drawings, later intentionally exposing them. I made prints of them in my darkroom, but all but a few have survived. The bulk of them have been stolen by Poland.

The subject of this drawing on the glass plate is Envy Street. The Hero, a doer is returning home from an expedition with his faithful horse, being jeered at by the Polish intellectual riff-raff that always knows everything better without ever DOING anything in their life. It is they who cultivate the Mildew of Bondage, so that the virile neighbors enslave Poland repeatedly. They blame the invaders, or Providence, or God.. but never themselves for the barbaric inhumanity suffered. They do not know my saying, that History is but a symptom of the intrinsic WORTH of a given nation. When a nation becomes Glorious, it is due to the fact that they cherish men of INSPIRATION. When a nation is pitiful, it is because such Inspirers are jeered and hounded to death. When nations are led by the MESSENGERS of national biology, they sit on God's lap, purring and free. When they are left to their uncharted meanderings, they are misled by sterile intellectuals.

No wonder many turn to prayers and employ the Virgin of Czestochowa to protect the nation from Yetinsyn Predators as did the Tibetans of Lhasa, whirring their prayer-wheels in frantic delusion that doing nothing brings the unearned Nirvana.
